Colleges in Stockton

San Joaquin Delta College is Stockton's community college and serves the educational needs of the metropolitan area's working professionals. The school is part of the Higher Education Consortium of Central California and caters to students who want to gain job training, retrain for a better career, or transfer to a four-year university. The school offers both associate degree and certificate programs in a range of subjects including: culinary arts, nurse assistant training, early childhood education, and fire science. San Joaquin Delta College also hosts a, “Kids College” program, which provides educational opportunities for children, teens, and adults. The college's students attend classes at its main campus with several courses also being taught at two smaller facilities located outside of Stockton.

California State University Stanislaus is the only public four-year institution in San Joaquin County. Although the school's main campus is in Turlock, California, the university has a smaller campus in Stockton, which is called the Stockton Center. In addition to its MBA and Executive MBA courses, the school offers nine undergraduate, three master's, and four credential programs. The university also offers upper division courses that earn credit towards select baccalaureate and master's degrees and credentials. The majority of the school's students are full-time working adults who have completed their lower division course work at community college and transferred to CSU Stanislaus in order to finish off their four-year degree.

Stockton and the surrounding area are currently home to five private, not-for-profit colleges and universities. The two most well known universities in the area are: National University and University of the Pacific. The former is a large institution with campuses all across California and one in Nevada. The university's Stockton campus offers students access to undergraduate and graduate degree programs in over 70 fields of study. However, this particular campus tends to specialize in education and business, with psychology and psychology counseling also widely studied.

University of the Pacific, on the other hand, is a smaller private institution with approximately 7,000 students, half of which are undergraduates. The university has seven campuses in Stockton on which students can choose between the university's 80 majors. The list of subjects that students may specialize in includes: music management, international business, applied mathematics, and environmental studies. Pacific boasts an average class size of 19 students and also has a law school, which is located in Sacramento and a school of dentistry in San Francisco. While there are some students from other states, over 80 percent of University of the Pacific students are from within California.

Given the disproportionately large impact that the 2008 financial crisis had on Stockton, the city's economy is not as vibrant as it once was. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the city's unemployment rate in March 2014 was 13.1 percent. Recent economic indicators suggest, however, that the city is on its way to recovery.

Stockton's location, in particular, has been integral to jumpstarting the city's economic regrowth. The San Joaquin Valley is the fifth largest agricultural county in the Unite States and is the largest producer of asparagus in California. The region has recently also begun to experiment with wine production. Furthermore, Stockton is strategically located along California's extensive delta system and among several major highways making the city an excellent transportation hub and home to the third largest landholder port in California.

According to Forbes, the education, manufacturing, and telecommunications industries are also major sources of revenue and employment in Stockton. As previously mentioned, there are a significant number of colleges and universities in Stockton especially relative to the city's small size. University of the Pacific, for example, is one of the city's major employers. In addition, Stockton is home to several major manufacturing companies including: Crown Bolt, Dopaco, Sortex, and Noll Manufacturing. Other large companies in the area include: Golden State Lumber Company, Applied Aerospace Company, Bay Area Circuits, Duraflame, and Sigma Circuits. While Stockton is not its headquarters, Pac-West Telecommunications houses one of its seven data centers in the Stockton area.
