More colleges and universities are concentrated in the metropolitan area of Atlanta than anywhere else in the American South. Institutions include campuses associated with the Technical College System of Georgia, the University System of Georgia, and a range of private colleges, universities and academies, many of them offering distance-learning programs. Georgia's largest city is home to 16 colleges and universities, including some of the country's oldest historically black colleges for both men and women.
Colleges in Atlanta
Atlanta's two largest schools are part of the University System of Georgia. Together, Georgia State University and the Georgia Institute of Technology account for more than 60,000 students — more than all the other students in every other university and college in Atlanta combined. The Atlanta Metropolitan State College is also part of the USG network. Although a fourth USG institution, the University of Georgia, is listed by Atlanta's official city website as an Atlanta school, it is located in the city of Athens, Georgia.
Georgia has an extensive network of public community colleges called the Technical College System of Georgia, encompassing 26 technical colleges operating throughout the state. Atlanta's primary TCSG campus is Atlanta Technical College. It is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and offers diplomas, technical certificates of credit and associate of applied science degrees.
Atlanta has a long and rich history of private universities and colleges — often offering higher education to gifted people who couldn't access it elsewhere. Two of the oldest and most celebrated historically African-American colleges — all-female Spelman and all-male Morehouse — are in Atlanta. The city is also home to two other notable historically black colleges, Morris Brown College and Clark Atlanta University.
In addition, there are several other nonprofit private universities in Atlanta. Among them is the largest private university in Georgia, Emory University, which boasts one of the highest-rated health care systems in the Southeast.
